College Council

The College Council plays a crucial role in the governance of Monterey Secondary College, supporting the Principal to ensure the best educational outcomes for students. Its primary responsibilities include:

Finance:

  • Overseeing the development of the College’s annual budget.
  • Ensuring proper records of the College’s financial operations are maintained.

Strategic Planning:

  • Participating in the development and monitoring of the College’s strategic plan.

Policy Development and Review:

  • Developing, reviewing, and updating policies that reflect the College’s values and broad direction as outlined in the strategic plan.

Role of the College Council

The College Council at Monterey Secondary College has the authority to set the key directions of the College. It oversees the College’s operations, including:

  • Establishing the College’s broad direction and vision.
  • Developing and monitoring the College Strategic Plan.
  • Reviewing and updating College policies, including the Student Code of Conduct and Dress Code.
  • Approving the annual budget and monitoring expenditure.
  • Raising funds for College related purposes.
  • Maintaining College grounds and facilities.
  • Entering into contracts (e.g., cleaning services).
  • Reporting annually to the Learning Community and the Department of Education and Training (DET).
  • Stimulating interest in the College within the wider community.
  • Representing and considering the views of the community.
  • Regulating and facilitating after-hours use of College premises and grounds.

Monterey Secondary College Council Members

The council is led by the President, supported by the Vice President and Treasurer. Council meetings are held at least eight times a year, typically on a Tuesday evening.

College Council does not:

  • Manage the College.
  • Employ teaching staff.
  • Represent sectional interests.
  • Renew the Principal’s contract or hire and fire the Principal.
  • Determine class allocations.
  • Discuss individual issues between teachers and students and/or parents.
